The City of London Corporation has used its influential position at the heart of the world’s financial markets to raise awareness and encourage action on climate change. Recognising that the City must plan for the now inevitable effects of climate change, the organisation has developed a climate-change adaptation strategy that aims to climate-proof its infrastructure and services – for example, by dealing with flood risks and managing heat and air-pollution risks. Employee engagement is central to the corporation’s environmental aims; there is a network of volunteer energy champions and the organisation holds a number of different awareness-raising events.
Benchmarking means different things to different people. But in its simplest form, it is about improving ourselves by learning from others. By comparing activities and aspects of performance with those of similar businesses or service providers, benchmarking enables an organisation to identify performance gaps and seek out new ideas, as well as providing the momentum necessary to drive improvements.
A decade of continuous economic growth in the UK appears to be coming to an end. According to economists, the impact of the "credit crunch", coupled with rapidly rising energy and raw-material costs, will lead to lower levels of economic activity and rising unemployment.
