The ECHA has added 14 chemical substances to its list of substances of very high concern, which will potentially require authorisation under the EU Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals (REACH) Regulation. The Helsinki-based agency has warned companies manufacturing or importing the listed substances to check their potential legal obligations following their inclusion on the candidate list. The 14 substances include several used to manufacture anthracene and carbon black, such as anthracene oil and paste, and which are described by the ECHA as persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic. Also on the latest list is aluminosilicate refractory ceramic fibres, 2,4 Dinitrotoluene, Diisobutyl phthalate and tris(2-chloroethyl)phosphate. A decision on whether the substances need to be subject to authorisation will be taken at a later date, says the ECHA.
